February Half Term in Cornwall
The honest weather: Cornwall in mid-February has around eight hours of daylight, average temperatures of 7-9°C in the day, and rainfall on around forty-five per cent of days. The wettest month statistically is December but February is still properly wet. The advantage is that the rainfall comes in patches — you can sometimes get a beautiful clear blue-sky day in February that looks like a different country from the previous wet week.
What works:
The Eden Project. The headline February-half-term attraction. The biomes are climate-controlled — the Rainforest Biome is hot and humid year-round, the Mediterranean Biome warm. The outdoor ice rink is open through February half term (typically running until 22 February 2026). The Scarecrow’s Wedding (Julia Donaldson) family event runs through the half term week.
National Maritime Museum Cornwall (Falmouth). Five floors of indoor exhibits. Scribblebot and Science of the Sea half-term programmes. Three to four hours of proper indoor cover.
Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay. Indoor underwater tunnel experience.
Cornish Seal Sanctuary (Gweek). Mostly outdoor but with significant indoor cover at the hospital and visitor centre. The pup season is in full swing — over the year’s pup rescue cycle, February has many seal pups in care in the hospital. Properly seasonal-specific reason to visit.
Newquay Zoo. Compact enough to manage with patchy weather. The Tropical House (sloths) is warm and indoor.

Cornish Christmas overhang: Mousehole Christmas Lights are typically lit until 5 January, so February visitors miss them. The Eden Project Christmas Lights Experience also closes early January.

Easter Holidays in Cornwall
The honest weather: Cornish Easter weather is unpredictable. Could be 18°C and brilliant blue skies; could be 8°C and lashing rain. Average daytime temperatures 10-13°C. Around ten hours of daylight by mid-April. The Atlantic warms slowly — sea temperatures in early April are still 9-10°C, properly cold.
What works:
Eden Project Easter trail. The Dragon Egg Trail typically runs 3-19 April 2026. Included with admission. Immersive dragon egg hunt across the biomes; craft workshops; Dragon Museum exhibits. One of the best Easter family attractions in the South West.
National Trust Easter trails. Trelissick and Lanhydrock both run 28 March – 19 April 2026 Easter trails. £3 per trail in addition to admission. Vegan egg option for the trail prizes. Properly engaging for kids; the trail format works across the gardens.
The major garden openings. Heligan, Trebah, Glendurgan, Caerhays Castle (open 2 March – 14 June 2026 — Easter is peak magnolia and camellia season), Trewithen. Spring is the peak of the Cornish garden year.
Beaches. Lifeguards arrive at the major beaches from Easter (some beaches earlier). Surf lessons available. Sea is too cold for casual swimming for most adults but acclimatised cold-water swimmers welcome it. The sand and the beach café atmosphere works even without swimming.
Coast path walks. The South West Coast Path is properly accessible by Easter. The walks from St Ives to Zennor, Padstow to Constantine, and the West Penwith granite coast all work for family walks.
Royal Cornwall Show is not Easter (4-6 June 2026) but the season’s first major events start mid-April — Porthleven Food Festival 24-26 April 2026, Trevithick Day 25 April, and the warming-up of the major attractions.
Accommodation strategy: Easter is the first peak booking period of the year. Cottages and hotels charge close to summer prices for the Easter fortnight. Book by January 2026 minimum for prime locations; cheaper alternatives still available in shoulder areas.
May Half Term in Cornwall
The honest weather: May half term (25-29 May 2026) is probably the year’s best weather-to-crowds ratio for Cornish families. Average daytime temperatures 14-16°C; around fifteen hours of daylight by late May; rainfall down to around 30% of days; gardens at peak; sea warming to 11-13°C (still cold but workable in wetsuits).
What works: Almost everything. May half term is one of the best Cornish weeks of the year for families with primary-age kids. The full attraction list is open; the weather supports most outdoor activities; the gardens are still in peak spring bloom; the major events kick in.
The Padstow Obby Oss Day fell on 1 May (Friday) — the week before May half term starts. Helston Flora Day was 8 May. Both major folk festivals fall outside the half-term week itself but the Cornish tourist atmosphere has been activated by them. The Eden Sessions concerts in June are advertising heavily.
Surf lessons. The peak first-time surf lesson month. Water still cold (use a wetsuit), but the waves are summer-friendly. Family group lessons from £30-40 per person.
Boat trips. Padstow Sealife Safaris running. Wildlife cruises starting to see basking sharks (sightings are rare but the season is open from May). Falmouth ferry services running.

The Cornwall Open Studios week (23-31 May 2026) runs through May half term. 322 Cornish artists open their working studios. Free entry to all participating studios. Brilliant for older kids interested in art.
Holiday parks running entertainment. Trevornick (Holywell Bay) entertainment programme runs 17 May – 7 September. Hendra Oasis Fun Pools and soft play open. Perran Sands (Haven) lazy river opens 25 May for the season.
Accommodation strategy: May half-term is one of the busier shoulder-season weeks. Book by Christmas 2025 minimum. Less crowded than summer but properly busy at the popular destinations. Mid-week breaks (rather than Saturday-to-Saturday) often easier to find at the more popular cottages.
Summer School Holidays in Cornwall
The honest reality: Six weeks of peak crowds and peak prices. The advantages are real (best weather, sea warmest, full attraction programmes, longest days) but so are the disadvantages (queues at popular beaches, parking impossible by 9am, accommodation prices at maximum, restaurant bookings hard to come by).
The strategy that works:
Avoid the peak weeks if you can. Mid-July and late August are the absolute peak; July 23 – August 9 and August 22 – September 1 are the worst. Mid-August (10-22 August roughly) is sometimes slightly quieter than the start and end of school holidays — though it’s still busy.
Book accommodation by Christmas of the previous year. The popular cottages and the holiday parks book up early.
Use the major festivals. Boardmasters (5-9 August 2026) brings 50,000 visitors to Newquay/Watergate Bay — meaning the rest of Cornwall is comparatively quieter that week. Conversely the Newquay area is impossible.
Start days early. Cornish car parks are full by 9am at popular beaches in school summer holidays. The window from 8-10am is the easy parking window.
Eat off-peak. Lunch at 12 noon or 2.30pm beats lunch at 1pm. Book restaurants for 6.30pm rather than 8pm.
Pre-book attractions. Eden Project, Heligan, Newquay Zoo, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary all save you money via online advance booking and avoid you waiting at the gate.

October Half Term in Cornwall
The honest weather: Cornwall in late October still benefits from the residual summer sea temperatures. Average daytime temperatures 13-15°C; around ten hours of daylight by half-term week (26-30 October); rainfall around 30-35% of days. The weather is properly variable — can be the year’s worst storm conditions or can be glorious autumn light. The summer school holiday crowds have completely gone.
The October half-term magic: The shoulder-season sweet spot. All major attractions still open. Beaches genuinely accessible (parking trivial). Restaurants able to give proper attention. Accommodation around half the August price. Sea temperature still 13-15°C (workable for confident swimmers with wetsuits). The Cornish autumn light is properly distinctive — the low sun, the long shadows, the moor and cliff drama enhanced.
What works:
Eden Project Halloween events. Major October half-term programming — typically pumpkin trails, Halloween story-tellers, evening lantern walks. Family-friendly and engaging.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan Night Garden starts 15 November (just after half-term) but the daytime garden is in autumn colour.
