Boardmasters: The Cornish Summer Headline
Boardmasters is the biggest summer festival in Cornwall by some margin. Two sites, one event: the music festival runs at Trebelsue Farm overlooking Watergate Bay (the camping plus all the major stages plus the headline performances), and the WSL surf competition runs at Fistral Beach in Newquay. 2026 dates: Wednesday 5 to Sunday 9 August 2026.
The headliners are Kasabian, Fatboy Slim, The Kooks and Loyle Carner with additional sets from Dizzee Rascal, Tinie Tempah, Example, Lily Allen and REN. Weekend tickets start around £234 plus booking fees and the litter bond. Day tickets are sold for some days but weekend camping is the traditional Boardmasters experience.
The transport piece matters. Newquay is end-of-the-line on the A30; Saturday Boardmasters traffic backs up for miles. The official Festival Shuttle Bus wristband is £12.50 for unlimited shuttle access between the music site and Newquay during the festival (single £3.50; return £7). Big Green Coach runs official coach travel from eighty-plus UK pickup points — significantly easier than driving for most visitors. Premier Inn Newquay and the Elemental Surf Lodge are the official accommodation partners.
The camping options include Chilled Camping (16+ only — quieter), Pre-Pitched Camping (your tent already there when you arrive — extra cost), Bell Tents (the boutique option — properly expensive but properly comfortable). Standard camping is the cheapest option but is genuinely chaotic; festival veterans recommend the Chilled site if you can swing it.
The surf competition runs alongside the music festival. The WSL Boardmasters Open at Fistral is the ninth consecutive year of the pro surf event at the festival. Shortboard and longboard pro divisions, junior open, plus BMX and skate exhibitions. Free to watch from the beach.

The Cornish Summer Music Festival Circuit
Tunes in the Dunes
5-7 June 2026, Perranporth Beach. The Cornish music festival on the actual beach. Three days; family-friendly; lineup for 2026 includes Professor Green, The Wombats, Scouting for Girls, Sigala, The Proclaimers, Dutty Moonshine Big Band and The Amy Winehouse Band. The Perranporth pub The Watering Hole sits in the festival site — the only pub on a Cornish beach.
Tunes in the Dunes is significantly smaller and more family-friendly than Boardmasters. The age range skews older; the music programming covers indie, pop, dance and tribute acts; the beach setting genuinely works.
Kernowfornia Festival (formerly Looe Music Festival)
4-6 September 2026, East Looe Beach. The rebrand of the long-running Looe Music Festival. Kula Shaker headlines Saturday; James Morrison, Starsailor, Seth Lakeman, Kalandra and This is The Kit complete the early line-up. Late summer beach festival in a working harbour town. The Looe Live free fringe runs alongside the ticketed festival — eighty-plus live music performances across the town’s pubs and pop-ups.
Little Orchard Cider & Music Festival
11-13 September 2026, Healey’s Cyder Farm, Penhallow. Thirteenth edition. Three-day cider-and-folk-music festival on a working Cornish cider farm. Early Bird tickets from £75. Silent disco; BBC Introducing stage; camping and glamping. Family-friendly, smaller than the headline acts but properly characterful. Healey’s makes the Cornish cider you’ll have drunk at every pub in the county.
Great Estate Festival
29-31 May 2026, Scorrier House. Cornwall’s family-music-festival headline. Described by its founders as “Europe’s most rambunctious garden fete.” Tickets from £45. Family-focused programming includes the Greatest Skate, Victorian Sports Day, circus workshops, plus a proper music programme. Properly characterful; the kids will remember it.
Morvala Festival
25-28 June 2026, Mount Edgcumbe. Late June festival on the south coast Rame Peninsula estate. Embrace, Hawkwind, Fink, Billie Marten and Toploader headline 2026. Mid-sized festival with strong wellness component (sauna, forest walks).
Tunes in the Park
27-30 August 2026, Port Eliot Estate. Bank Holiday weekend music festival at the historic Port Eliot estate. Adult camping from £110. Smaller, more boutique than Boardmasters; family-friendly.
Rock Oyster Festival
23-26 July 2026, Dinham House Estate, Wadebridge. Food-led festival with music programming. Nathan Outlaw and Jack Stein cook; multiple stages run music alongside. Properly characterful four-day festival in a Cornish country house grounds.
Eden Sessions
June and July 2026, Eden Project. Outdoor concerts in the Eden Project pit. 2026 confirmed acts include Wolf Alice (16 June), Snow Patrol (18 June), Becky Hill (20 June), Bastille (9 July), Ben Howard (10 July), The Maccabees (11 July), Mika (12 July), CMAT (15 July). Eden Sessions are evening adult concerts; under-fourteens admitted with adult only. Spectacular setting with the biomes lit behind the stage.
The Traditional Cornish Summer Festivals
These are the cultural festivals worth planning a trip around. Most are free, properly atmospheric, and offer something you’ll find nowhere else in Britain.
Padstow ‘Obby ‘Oss Day
1 May 2026 (Friday). One of the oldest surviving folk festivals in Britain, pre-Christian in origin. Up to 30,000 visitors. Two rival ‘Osses (Padstow’s ‘Obby ‘Oss are wooden frames carried by dancers): the Old ‘Oss (red) emerges from the Golden Lion pub at 11am; the Blue Ribbon ‘Oss (Temperance origin, Victorian-era response to the wildness) emerges from the Padstow Institute at 10am. The Children’s ‘Oss makes its first appearance around 7.30am. Both ‘Osses meet at the maypole on Broad Street around 6pm.
Don’t drive into Padstow. Book accommodation six months ahead minimum (you’ll be hard-pressed at three months out). Stay overnight on 30 April so you can attend the midnight “Night Song” outside the Golden Lion Inn. The Padstow Obby Oss is one of those folk events that has survived because the town has refused to commercialise it.
Helston Flora Day
8 May 2026 (Friday). The other major Cornish folk festival. Helston Flora Day’s timings: 7am Early Morning Dance, 8:30am Hal-an-Tow pageant at St John’s Bridge, 10am Children’s Dance, 12 noon Midday Dance (the Furry Dance — the famous one), 5pm Evening Dance. Lily of the valley sprigs worn by dancers and audience alike.
The town entirely closes to traffic for the day. Park out of town and walk in. The Furry Dance at midday is the famous one — formal dress required to dance, but the audience watching is the proper event for visitors. The Hal-an-Tow pageant is the Cornish-language mummers’ play with the various rival figures (Robin Hood, St George, the Devil) and the call-and-response shouts.
Penzance Golowan Festival and Mazey Day
19-28 June 2026 (festival); Mazey Day Saturday 27 June 2026. Ten-day midsummer Celtic celebration. Mazey Day is the headline — the town centre is closed to traffic from 6am to 7pm, with the Penglaz horse, dragons, brass bands and processional dancing through the streets. Quay Fair Day on Sunday 28 June continues the festival on the Promenade.
Free to attend. Bring family. The festival was revived in 1991 from older records going back to 1754 — older than that probably, as it traces from the Celtic Golowan (“feast of St John”) midsummer fires that probably pre-date Christian Cornwall by centuries.
Royal Cornwall Show
4-6 June 2026, Wadebridge. The major county agricultural show, with extensive food halls, livestock judging, equestrian events, demonstrations and a serious music programme on the main arena. Three days; family-friendly; bigger than most visitors expect.
St Ives September Festival
12-26 September 2026. Two-week music, literature and arts festival in St Ives. Three hundred-plus events; running since 1978. Includes Norway Square Sessions (free outdoor performances) and Open Studios week (artists open their working spaces to visitors). The festival itself is properly characterful and St Ives in mid-September is one of the best weeks of the Cornish year.
Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival
12-14 June 2026. Largest free nautical music festival in Europe. Eighty-plus shanty groups from across the maritime world perform across Falmouth’s quays, pubs and outdoor stages. Sixty-five thousand visitors. Free to attend. The Greenbank Hotel, Events Square, and Church Street Car Park are the main venues. Combine with Falmouth Classics (12-14 June) for a triple-bill maritime weekend.
Mevagissey Feast Week
28 June – 4 July 2026. The longest-running festival in Cornwall (since 1754, originally St Peter’s feast). Live music, parades, raft races, fish feasts, fireworks. Properly community-focused — not a “tourist festival” but a working fishing-village’s annual party that welcomes visitors.
Newquay Food Festival
9-12 July 2026, Killacourt. Newquay’s annual food festival. Fire-cooking demonstrations; local producers; chef appearances. Free entry.

The Smaller Festivals Worth Knowing
Trevithick Day, Camborne (25 April 2026). Industrial heritage celebration with the “Puffing Devil” replica steam engine, bal maiden and miner parades. Thirty thousand visitors. Last Saturday in April annually.
Bude Food Festival (Easter Monday + 9 August 2026). Two-day events at The Castle, Bude. Local producers; chef demos.
St Mawes Town Regatta (typically early August — verify 2026 dates locally). 120-plus years running. Children’s beach sports morning, sailing afternoon, aquatic events, band on quay.
Charlestown Regatta Week (from 25 August 2026). Working harbour regatta with tall ships (Anny and Mascotte often in dock). Sea shanties, pasty-making, regatta ball.
Cornish Sardine Festival, Newlyn (23-24 August 2026). Inaugural new event in 2025 has become annual; celebrates the Newlyn sardine fishery.
World Pilot Gig Championships, Isles of Scilly (1-3 May 2026). 130-plus pilot gig crews competing. Running since 1990 across the Bank Holiday weekend. Brilliant if you can make Scilly for the May Day weekend.

Festival Accommodation Strategy
Cornish festival accommodation prices spike dramatically around the major events. The strategy that works:
Boardmasters week (5-9 August 2026). Newquay and Watergate Bay accommodation is fully booked from January onwards. Festival camping is the obvious option for ticket-holders. Non-festival visitors should stay away from Newquay that week or stay in Padstow (forty minutes’ drive but the next-best north-coast base).
Padstow May Day (‘Obby ‘Oss, 1 May 2026). Padstow accommodation is sold out six months out. Book by November. Alternatives: Rock (across the ferry); Wadebridge (twenty minutes inland); the wider north coast cottages.
Helston Flora Day (8 May 2026). Helston has limited accommodation; nearby Falmouth, Penzance and Porthleven all work as bases for the day.
Falmouth Sea Shanty + Classics weekend (12-14 June 2026). Falmouth accommodation books up early. Combine with Falmouth Week (7-16 August) as a double accommodation issue.
Falmouth Week (7-16 August 2026). Falmouth is rammed all ten days. Penzance is the alternative south-coast base.
St Ives September Festival (12-26 September 2026). St Ives is mid-volume; cottages and B&Bs available but it’s prudent to book three months ahead. The festival is mid-September which is also the post-summer warm-water-still-warm-but-quieter window, so the demand is naturally elevated.

Festival Transport Reality
Cornwall’s transport infrastructure does not absorb festival traffic well. The A30 is the spine; the lanes off it are properly narrow. Practical advice:
Train where possible. The GWR mainline runs the length of Cornwall to Penzance. St Ives, Falmouth and Looe have branch lines from the main route. Newquay has its own branch line from Par with one direct service per day from London.
Coach services for the big festivals. Big Green Coach runs to Boardmasters from eighty-plus UK pickup points. National Express runs to Newquay year-round.
Park-and-ride for traditional festivals. Padstow operates a park-and-ride from the village outskirts for ‘Obby ‘Oss Day. Helston operates similarly for Flora Day. Porthleven Food Festival runs Flambards Helston park-and-ride every 15-20 minutes.
Avoid Saturday A30 traffic during Boardmasters. Wednesday and Sunday afternoon are the worst single days. Leave early or arrive mid-week.
Ticket-Release Timing
The festival ticket calendar works in waves. The pattern that’s worked for years:
September-November (previous year): Early Bird tickets released for the next year’s biggest festivals. Boardmasters in particular releases steeply discounted tickets in autumn for the following August’s event. Best value if you commit nine months ahead.
January-February: First lineup announcements. Tickets at standard price.
April-May: Additional acts added to lineups. Ticket prices may rise.
Two weeks before the event: Last-minute releases; sometimes returned tickets become available. Boardmasters does not usually sell at the gate.
For free traditional festivals: No tickets needed but accommodation is the binding constraint. Book early.

Camping for Boardmasters: The Honest Picture
If you’re going to Boardmasters and camping is part of the plan, the realities worth knowing:
Standard camping is genuinely chaotic. Tents pitched on top of each other; loud overnight; the kind of festival camping that suits 18-25-year-olds. If you’re older or want sleep, pay the premium.
Chilled Camping is 16+ only and meaningfully quieter. Worth the extra cost. Book early — it sells out.
Pre-Pitched Camping is the parent-friendly option. Tent already up when you arrive; bedding included; you carry less. Around £100-200 extra per person depending on the year.
Bell Tents are the proper boutique option. £400-800 per tent for the weekend depending on size and inclusions. Sleeps four to six comfortably.
The walk from the camping fields to the main stages is around fifteen minutes; longer in the dark with a flask of cider in hand. Pack a head torch.
