The combination of the surf coast (Boardmasters, the WSL surf comp, the Wavemasters, the various Quiksilver and Hurley Pro events), the long sea swimming distance available, the cycling-friendly back roads, the proper marathons routed along genuine coast paths and headlands, and the established Cornish Tri Series produces a sporting calendar that goes from January’s ultra-marathon to November’s road marathon. After watching the events scene grow each year, I’ve come to think Cornwall is one of the genuinely good UK sporting destinations for both participants and spectators. This Cornwall surf competitions and sporting events guide is the practical 2026 version.
I’ll cover the major surf competitions, the running events (from the ARC of Attrition 100-mile ultra to the Eden Project Marathon), the triathlon circuit (the Cornish Tri Series and other events), the World Pilot Gig Championships, the cycling events, plus the local team fixtures across rugby, football and cricket. Boardmasters Surf Competition
5-9 August 2026, Fistral Beach, Newquay. Cornwall’s headline surf competition runs alongside the Boardmasters music festival. The WSL Boardmasters Open at Fistral is now in its ninth consecutive year — making it the UK’s longest-running professional surf competition.
The Programme
WSL Boardmasters Open — the main professional event. Shortboard pro division (men’s and women’s); longboard pro division; junior open competitions. Two professional surfing tour events in one festival.
BMX and skate competitions alongside the surfing. The festival has properly integrated the multi-discipline action sports culture.
Free to watch from the beach. No admission charge for surf-comp spectators; the music festival has separate ticketing.
The conditions: early August Fistral typically produces 2-4 foot waves on average (occasionally bigger). The conditions favour the high-performance shortboard discipline plus the elegant longboard riding. WSL professional surfers from across the world compete at Boardmasters as part of the UK leg of the world tour qualifying.
Watching the Boardmasters Surf
Best spectator positions: the cliffs above Fistral Beach (Pentire Headland on the south side, the Headland Hotel cliff on the north side); the beach itself at the southern (sheltered) end; the surf-shop balconies of the venues at the back of the beach.
Arrive early. Friday and Saturday are peak crowd days. Parking at Fistral fills by 9am during the festival; use the Newquay town parking and walk down (twenty minutes) or use the Festival Shuttle Bus from town.

English Adaptive Surfing Open
June 2026, Watergate Bay / Fistral. The UK’s premier adaptive surfing championship. Divisions for standing, sitting/kneeling, prone, assisted, open and visually impaired competitors. Family-friendly atmosphere; free spectator access. Surfing England runs the event.
The Wavemasters / Winter Surf Events
Various winter surf competitions at Fistral when the bigger swells produce proper conditions. The events are weather-dependent — typically organised on shorter notice when the forecast aligns. Watch Surfing England for announcements.
Hurley UK Pro / Quiksilver UK Pro / GromSearch
The brand-sponsored professional surf events appear at Fistral and Newquay periodically. The 2026 calendar updates as the year progresses; verify specific dates with Surfing England.
The Cribbar Big-Wave Event
The Cribbar — the offshore reef break at Towan Headland, Newquay — only breaks in proper conditions a few times each year. When it breaks, the international big-wave surf community appears. The 2026 dates can’t be planned — the Cribbar will break when it breaks. Local Cornish surf media (the Headland Hotel, Surfing England, local Newquay surf shops) will announce when the conditions align.
The Major Running Events
ARC of Attrition (Ultra Marathon)
22-25 January 2026. 100-mile winter coastal ultra-marathon along the South West Coast Path. Properly serious endurance event. Starting in Coverack on the Lizard; running clockwise to a Bude-area finish. Around 36 hours typical for the leading finishers; 60 hours for the cut-off. Winter conditions on the Cornish coast — proper exposure, headwinds, gradients.
Spectator-friendly: you can drive between checkpoints and meet the runners at multiple locations across the course. The race attracts international ultra-running attention; the Cornish coast path in January looks properly cinematic.
Eden Project Marathon and Half Marathon
18 October 2026. One of the major Cornish autumn running events. The marathon route is around 70% trail / 30% road; the half marathon is around 60% road / 40% trail. Start and finish at the Eden Project itself. Trail running across the Cornish lanes and footpaths surrounding the Eden site.
Entry from £37 (half marathon) / £43 (marathon). Family-friendly atmosphere at the start/finish area. The Eden Project entrance is included in the race entry — properly good value combination.
Cornish Marathon
1 November 2026, Pensilva. Cornwall’s only all-road marathon. Start and finish at Pensilva (north-east of Liskeard). The route runs through the Cornish lanes; properly hilly. Smaller field than the Eden marathon; more intimate atmosphere; great for marathon runners who like the country-lane setting.
Run Falmouth Half Marathon
15 March 2026. Spring half marathon around the Falmouth area. The route includes the Pendennis Headland section and some of the surrounding coastal lanes. Family spectator-friendly atmosphere; the Falmouth town centre as the start/finish area.
Summer Sunset Half (Perranporth)
11 July 2026. Evening half marathon starting and finishing at Perranporth. The Atlantic-side beach town setting; the sun setting over the Atlantic during the race. Distinctive Cornish summer race.
Indian Queens Half Marathon
2 August 2026. Mid-Cornwall half marathon. Smaller field; properly local feel.
Truro Half Marathon
13 September 2026. Autumn half marathon based in Truro. The route uses the Cornish lanes around the city.
Endurancelife North Cornwall Trail Series
Polzeath-based ultra trail running series. 10k, half marathon, marathon and ultra distances across the season. Multiple weekends through the year (typically September to July). The Endurancelife brand is the major UK trail-marathon operator and the North Cornwall venue is one of their flagship locations.
Classic Quarter Coastal Ultra
Endurancelife’s iconic ultra-distance race along the South West Coast Path. Around 44 miles. Properly serious.

Newquay Tri (“The Goat”)
Tolcarne Beach swim plus headland bike plus Porth or Watergate run. Olympic distance, Sprint distance, Super Sprint distance (“Little Goat”) plus junior categories. One of the proper Cornish triathlons — uses the working town landscape rather than artificial venue.
World Pilot Gig Championships
1-3 May 2026, Isles of Scilly. The world championship of Cornish pilot gig racing. 130-plus competing crews; 88 affiliated clubs across the UK plus international competitors.
Six-oared rowing boats in Cornish elm; race categories include Open (mixed), Women, Vets (40+), Super Vets (50+) and Masters (60+). Entry around £50 per gig per category.
The world championships have run continuously since 1990. Properly the headline event of the Cornish rowing sport calendar. Day-trip from Penzance using helicopter is the realistic option for casual visitors; serious enthusiasts plan Scilly accommodation years ahead.

11 May 2026. Two distance options: Half Pint 59km and Full Pint 77km. Spring road sportive based in the Cornish lanes around St Ives.
Land’s End Sportive
18 May 2026. 75km road sportive or 43km Penlee Pedal variant. Starting from the iconic Land’s End location.
Cardinham Woods Mountain Bike Events
Cross-country mountain biking events at Cardinham Woods through the season. The 12km Bodmin Beast blue trail plus the red-graded features support proper MTB racing.
Cornwall Pirates Cycle Sportive (verify 2026)
Various charity rides through the season.
Land’s End to John o’Groats events
Various charity walks and cycles starting from Land’s End. The Cornish stage of the LEJOG route attracts charity riders and walkers through the warmer months.

The Cornish open-water swim culture has grown rapidly:
Cornish Open Water Swim Series — typically based at Stithians Reservoir, with multiple distance events through May to September. Family-friendly atmosphere; properly accessible introduction to open-water competition.
Bude Sea Pool swim events — informal swim events at the community-saved Bude Sea Pool through the year.

25-26 July 2026, Newquay. Industry expo plus exhibition events. The UK skateboarding and surfing brands showcasing new product; demos and competitions alongside.
Newquay Rugby, Camborne Rugby, Cornish Pirates
The major Cornish rugby clubs operating through the season. Cornish Pirates play at the Mennaye Field in Penzance — properly the southern-most professional rugby club in England. The Pirates compete in the RFU Championship. Match calendar from August through May.
Truro RFC, Newquay RFC, Camborne RFC operate in the lower leagues with proper local Cornish following.
Truro City FC
Truro City Football Club. The county’s biggest football club. Now operating in the National League (the fifth tier of English football). Home ground at Truro. Match calendar from August through May.
Cornwall County Cricket Club
Plays in the Cluberly Championship Western Division 2 of the minor counties cricket structure. Limited-overs 50-over plus T20 formats. Home grounds rotate including a fixture at Truro on 12 July 2026. Properly characterful Cornish county cricket — players are amateur or semi-professional; the cricket is competitive without the first-class intensity.
Local Sporting Heritage
Cornish wrestling. The traditional Cornish form of wrestling (similar to Lancashire wrestling but with distinct rules) survives through the Cornish Wrestling Association. Demonstrations at the Royal Cornwall Show and various traditional events.

Tide-State and Sea-Temperature Knowledge for Surf Spectators
Watching the Boardmasters surf comp benefits from understanding the conditions:
Mid-tide is when most beach breaks (including Fistral) produce their best waves. The schedule is built around this — heats run during the best wave window.
Late morning to mid-afternoon is the typical spectator window. The light is best for photography; the sea has warmed slightly from dawn; the wind hasn’t yet picked up to the late-afternoon onshore.
Sea temperature in early August is 16-17°C — properly warm for British surf but properly cold for casual swimming. The professional surfers wear 2/2 wetsuits at most; some surf in board shorts when conditions allow.
Wind direction: the offshore-wind days produce the cleanest conditions. Fistral wants easterly or south-easterly offshore for the best waves. Onshore westerly is the most common but the worst for clean surf.
