The Species: A Cornish Rock Pool Identification Guide

Crabs

Shore crab (Carcinus maenas). The standard issue British rock pool crab. Green-brown to greenish, occasionally orange-tinged. Up to 8cm wide. Found everywhere. Don’t grab them by the claws — they’ll grab you back.

Hermit crab (Pagurus bernhardus). Lives in borrowed periwinkle or whelk shells. Withdraws inside when threatened. As they grow, they swap up to larger shells. Children love watching them walk.

Velvet swimming crab (Necora puber). Bright red eyes; blue-banded back legs (which are flattened for swimming); fierce. Will pinch hard. Don’t pick up barehanded. Beautiful but aggressive.

Edible crab (Cancer pagurus). The big-bodied crab with the “pie crust” edge to the shell. Up to 25cm wide for the larger specimens (though most rockpool finds are juveniles). The crab in your pasty.

Spider crab (Maja brachydactyla). Long-legged, often camouflaged with seaweed pieces attached to the shell. Slow-moving. Migratory through Cornish waters in summer.

Squat lobster (Galathea squamifera). Lobster-like but smaller, with the abdomen tucked under the body. Bright red-orange. Hides under rocks.

Anemones

Beadlet anemone (Actinia equina). Small red blobs stuck to rocks when exposed at low tide; open like flowers underwater. The most common Cornish anemone.

Snakelocks anemone (Anemonia viridis). Green with purple-tipped tentacles. Doesn’t retract its tentacles when exposed (unlike beadlets). Mild sting on sensitive skin.

Dahlia anemone (Urticina felina). Large flower-like anemone with stripey tentacles. Up to 15cm across when extended.

Jewel anemone (Corynactis viridis). Small, colourful encrusting anemones on Cornish reef rocks. Pink, orange, white, mauve. The dense colonies on the Manacles pinnacles are spectacular but they’re more a diver’s species than a rockpool one.

Strawberry anemone (Actinia fragacea). Larger relative of the beadlet; brown-red with spotted markings.

Fish

Shanny / common blenny (Lipophrys pholis). Mottled brown, eel-shaped, up to 15cm long. Hides under rocks; can survive out of water for some time at low tide. The most common rockpool fish in Cornwall.

Tompot blenny (Parablennius gattorugine). The orange-red fish with the crown-like head tentacles. Striking. Larger pools and deeper rockpools.

Rock goby (Gobius paganellus). Smaller, often olive-brown. Two dorsal fins (the key identification feature — blennies have one long dorsal fin).

Butterfish (Pholis gunnellus). Long, eel-like, with a row of black spots along the dorsal fin. Hides under rocks; difficult to handle (slippery).

Lumpsucker (Cyclopterus lumpus). Bizarre globular fish with a sucker disc on the underside. Occasional rockpool find.

Sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus). Pale sandy fish living on sandy bottom of pools.

Starfish

Common starfish (Asterias rubens). Five arms, orange-red, up to 25cm across though rockpool finds are smaller. The standard image starfish.

Cushion star (Asterina gibbosa). Small (5cm or less), brown or pink, flat. Common under stones.

Brittlestar (Ophiuroidea). Long thin arms easily broken off (hence the name). Found among algae and under stones.

Sea Slugs and Nudibranchs

The colourful, photogenic underwater garden. Cornish rockpools have increasing diversity of sea slugs as climate change brings southern species north.

Sea lemon (Doris pseudoargus). Pale yellow, lemon-shaped. Common.

Yellow-plumed sea slug (Berthella plumula). Smaller yellow species.

Aeolids (various species). Brightly coloured nudibranchs with cerata (finger-like projections) on the back. Patient observation in a clear-water pool is rewarded with brilliant colour.

Molluscs

Common limpet (Patella vulgata). The cone-shaped shells stuck to rocks. Remarkable suction — try to lift a settled limpet and you’ll fail. Each limpet has a “home scar” on the rock where it returns at low tide.

Periwinkles (Littorina species). Several species — common, edible, flat, rough. The general dark snails on rocks.

Dog whelks (Nucella lapillus). Predatory snails that drill into limpet and mussel shells. Often white or pale yellow.

Top shells (Calliostoma species). Conical, often spiraled, with attractive colour patterns.

Mussels (Mytilus edulis). Blue-black, attached to rocks in clusters. Filter feeders.

Barnacles (Semibalanus balanoides and others). The white encrusting cones on rocks at high-tide mark. Crustaceans, not molluscs (despite looking similar).

Chitons. Flat oval molluscs with eight overlapping plates on the back. Cling to rocks like flattened limpets.

Shrimp and Prawn

Common prawn (Palaemon serratus). Translucent, with red-and-white striped legs. Common in rockpools.

Brown shrimp (Crangon crangon). Sandy-coloured, smaller, on sandy bottoms.

Shore shrimp (various species). Several smaller species, transparent or pale.

Other Notables

Sea urchins. Edible sea urchin and small black urchin both present. Spiny; don’t touch.

Sea squirts (tunicates). Bag-like filter feeders attached to rocks.

Octopus (Octopus vulgaris and curled octopus Eledone cirrhosa). Rare but increasing in Cornish rockpools as climate warms. Nocturnal mostly. The find of a rockpool career.

Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). Migratory through Cornish waters in spring and summer. Adults rarely in rockpools but juveniles possible in deeper pools.

Pipefish. Long, thin fish related to seahorses. Snake pipefish (Entelurus aequoreus) is the most common Cornish species; great pipefish less so.

Worms. Many species — peacock worms with their flower-like crowns, ragworms in sand, tube worms encrusting rocks. Worth a closer look.

The Tide-Timing Skill

Cornish rockpooling success depends almost entirely on tide timing.

Arrive two hours before low water and stay through the slack low-tide period. The most species are accessible during this window. Tides below 1.2 metres on the chart expose the lower shore where the more interesting species live.

Spring tides are best. Around new and full moon, the tidal range is at its maximum. The lowest low tides expose the lowest part of the shore. Two spring tide periods per month produce the year’s best rockpooling. The equinoxes (March and September) bring the extreme spring tides — these are the days when rarities turn up.

Neap tides (around quarter moons) have smaller range. Less shore exposed; safer for casual family rockpooling but less productive for serious naturalists.

Where the Different Species Live

Rockpool species sort themselves by zone — the height above mean low water. Knowing the zones helps you target which species you’re after.

Upper shore. Periwinkles, barnacles, occasional shore crabs, limpets. The “high and dry” species that tolerate long exposure.

Middle shore. The most species-rich zone. Beadlet anemones, shore crabs, dog whelks, top shells, mussels, blennies, hermit crabs.

Lower shore. The interesting zone. Tompot blennies, snakelocks anemones, common starfish, sea slugs, larger crabs, pipefish, the rare cephalopods. Only accessible at lowest low tides.

Sublittoral fringe. Below mean low water; only exposed on the lowest spring tides. The richest zone for species that don’t usually appear in rockpools — large anemones, deep-shore fish, the occasional octopus.

The Ethical Rockpooling Code

Cornish rockpooling is not extractive — you look, identify, and leave everything in place. The Cornwall Wildlife Trust and The Rock Pool Project both publish similar codes.

Replace stones exactly as found. The way-up matters because encrusting species (anemones, barnacles) sit on top and would be killed if flipped upside down. Each stone is a small ecosystem.

Return creatures to the same pool/spot you found them. Don’t carry crabs to a different beach. Microhabitat conditions vary; a creature moved across beaches may not survive.

No fresh water in buckets. Marine creatures die in fresh water from osmotic shock within minutes. If you must use a bucket, fill it from the sea.

Maximum 30 minutes in a bucket. Less if showing kids. Less in hot weather. Keep the bucket cool and shaded; change the seawater every 10-15 minutes.

Don’t pull anemones, urchins or limpets off rocks. The foot/base damage is often fatal.

Use a clear plastic tub for viewing rather than a net. Nets injure soft-bodied creatures. A tub lets you observe through the side.

Don’t take creatures home. Rockpool species are nearly impossible to keep in tanks without specialist equipment, and most don’t survive transport.

The Voluntary Marine Conservation Area at Hannafore (Looe) is the only Cornish site with explicit no-take protection beyond the standard Wildlife and Countryside Act — but the broader principle (look, don’t take) applies everywhere.

Identification: Blenny vs Goby

The most common ID question in Cornish rockpools. The shortcut:

Blennies have ONE long dorsal fin running most of the back. Common blenny (shanny), tompot blenny.

Gobies have TWO dorsal fins — one short at the front of the back, one longer behind. Rock goby, sand goby.

This simple distinction sorts out most ID confusion. The fish itself looks different too — blennies are more compact, gobies more elongated, but the dorsal fin count is the reliable telltale.

The Climate Change Story

Cornish rockpool species composition is shifting. The pattern in recent years:

More octopus. Once a rare find, common octopus is now reasonably regular in Cornish rockpools and inshore waters. Warming surface seas are pulling the species northward.

Cuttlefish migrations stronger. Late spring cuttlefish migrations bring large numbers through Cornish waters.

More southern sea slug species. Sea slug diversity has increased markedly.

Occasional southern visitors. Triggerfish, snake pipefish, and other Mediterranean species occasionally turn up.

Some northern species declining. The lumpsucker, once a common Cornish rockpool find, is now rarer.

Safety

The Cornish rockpool risks worth knowing:

Slippery rocks. Cornish rocks at low tide have algae and kelp on them. Move slowly; expect to slip occasionally; never run.

Incoming tide. Set a phone timer for low tide plus ninety minutes. Cornish spring tides come in fast — sometimes a metre per twenty minutes. Know your exit route.
